Why a One Stop Hernia Service?

Our One Stop Hernia Service could allow you the opportunity to receive all your advice and treatment on one day requiring only a single trip to the hospital.

Why is this different?

Following referral most surgeons will arrange a consultation to see you.  This will involve a visit to the hospital taking up a morning or afternoon of your time.  If surgery is decided upon you may have to attend the hospital for a pre-operative assessment and will then be admitted for your operation on another day.  Your surgery may or may not be undertaken as a day case, and if not you will stay in overnight.

How does the One Stop Service work?

The One Stop Service reduces the number of visits to hospital for most patients.  After referral by your GP we will contact you for a telephone assessment when you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have.  If everything is OK you will then be directed to our Website which provides comprehensive information for patients with hernias.  Your admission will be arranged on a date chosen by you when you will have a face to face consultation with Mr Boyle and the anaesthetist before undergoing the surgery later the same day.  You should then be able to return home without the need for an overnight stay.

Please note that although this One Stop Service will be suitable for most patients there are some who will require a separate consultation.

It's important that as a patient, you fully understand what the treatment involves and the options at each stage. Please read the next 7 pages and, if you have a confirmation code from the office, electronically "sign" the last page to confirm your understanding.

Inguinal hernias - definition

This is the commonest type of hernia and approximately 75,000 people undergo surgery to repair these in the United Kingdom every year. 95% occur in men. The primary cause is a weakness in the muscle wall in the groin. Soft tissue, including occasionally parts of the intestine, can then protrude through this weakness.
