6. What to expect

After referral by your GP you will be contacted directly by our Office. You will be asked a series of questions.

These are designed to

  1. How old are you?
  2. Do you have difficulty reducing your hernia?
  3. Does your hernia extend into the scrotum?
  4. Does your hernia increase in size month to month?
  5. Does it cause pain or discomfort, interfering with daily living activities?
  6. Have you had to have time off work or reduce your duties due to your hernia?
  7. What is your past medical history?
  8. Have you had previous abdominal surgery?
  9. Do you have any other illnesses?
  10. What medications do you take?
  11. Are you taking anticoagulants, such as Warfarin, Aspirin or Clopidogrel?
  12. Why do you take these?
  13. Do you live alone?
  14. If so, do you have somebody who could stay with you overnight?
  15. Are you able to arrange for somebody to collect you from hospital, as you will be unable to drive ?
  16. Would you prefer a laparoscopic or open operation?
  17. Do you want a local or general anaesthetic?

Following this initial telephone assessment you will then choose one of the following options:-

  1. Single visit with assessment and treatment on same day.
    You will be offered an appointment to be seen in the morning clinic, you will then undergo a pre-operative assessment if required, surgery in the afternoon with a view to returning home later that evening.

  2. Clinic appointment and assessment then subsequent appointment for surgery at a later date.
    Alternatively you can choose to be seen on a day separate to your surgery.  This will then allow you the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons, in person, and subsequent time to make your mind up how you wish to proceed.
    Following initial telephone assessment some patients will be advised that they should not proceed to one stop surgery and instead by assessed separately.
You will have the opportunity to indicate your initial preference regarding type of surgery.  You will always retain the option to change your mind on the day you are seen.
